  1. Take 2 and 1/2 cups Vermicelli -
  2. Take 3 and 1/2 cups Water - (1 cup more than the no. of cups of vermicelli)
  3. Take 1 carrot Chopped -
  4. Get half capsicum Chopped -
  5. Get 1 onion small Chopped -
  6. Take 4 chillis Slit green  (depends , my mom puts 3 per vermicelli cup) -
  7. Get Curry leaves - few
  8. Prepare 1 tsp Mustard seeds -
  9. Prepare 1/2 inch Ginger - finely crushed
  10. Take 1 tsp Urad dal -
  11. Get 1 tsp Chana dal -
  12. Take bunch Coriander leaves - a small
  13. Take 1 cup coconut Grated -
  14. Get 4 - 5 tbsps Oil -
  15. Take 5 tsps Sugar -
  16. Get to taste Salt (I put around 3 and 1/2 tsps) -

Semiya Upma also known as Vermicelli Upma is a quick and easy to prepare tasty breakfast. Vermicelli Upma / Semiya Upma is an easy breakfast dish and also a great lunch box dish for the kids. Instructions to make Semiya upma/ Shevai/ Vermicelli:
  1. Roast the vermicelli in around 1 or 2 tbsp oil till it becomes slightly brown and you get a pleasant smell. Keep aside.
  2. In a vessel, add 4-5 tbsp oil and add mustard seeds. Keep on medium flame. 
  3. When mustard seeds start to splutter, add curry leaves, slit green chillis, chopped onions, and crushed ginger. Saute till rawness of onions goes.
  4. Add the chopped carrot and capsicum. Saute till rawness of the vegetables goes.
  5. Add the 3 and 1/2 cups of water to the mixture in the vessel. Be careful as there may be splattering of oil. Keep on low flame while doing this, you may even cover the vessel with a plate and pour the water through a corner.
  6. Add the grated coconut and coriander to the mixture.
  7. Add sugar and salt to the mixture and bring the mixture to boil.
  8. Add in the roasted vermicelli into the mixture when you see few bubbles(indicating it is boiling). Let this cook for few minutes. You could stir regularly to avoid the vermicelli getting burnt.
  9. Shevai is ready!!

Semiya Upma-How to prepare Semiya Vegetable Upma. After a long time i am sitting and writing a post. Still feeling very lazy to come back to routine after a wonderful holiday for a Dry roast the vermicelli till they become nice golden brown. I skipped this stage since i bought the roasted vermicelli. Other types of upma includes rava upma, sabudana upma, oats upma, millets upma etc.
